Melva's Musings on Jazz

Time: Sundays @ 7 pm

Program Hosts: Melva Fager Okun

Contact: mokun@mindspring.com

My show, Melva's Musings on Jazz, features the music of North Carolina jazz musicians. I love having those currently playing to come and play live during my show. I have an unique show in that it is the only place where you can hear the sounds of how jazz is being interpreted here in North Carolina. Through the station's web-broadcast, that sound can be heard anywhere in the world. I have had people call in during my show from Hawaii, California, Michigan, Florida, New York City and Philadelphia. Besides playing the music of current jazz musicians, I play the music of the past jazz giants who had North Carolina roots. I brag on our state and say that NC has contributed more jazz musicians and music than any other state. The list is long but includes - Thelonius Monk, John Coltrane, Billy Taylor, Mary Lou Williams, Max Roach, Nina Simone, Dizzy Gillespie, Billy Strayhorn, Lou Donaldson, the Heath Brothers, Maceo Parker, McCoy Tyner, Grady Tate, Woody Shaw, and many others. I have a blog for my show, which connects listeners to the musicians and where you can hear more of their music. I enjoy people stopping by to listen to the music so please drop on by - or if you want to join the conversation by phone, please call me at the station at 919-929-9601. My dream is to have Branford Marsailes on my show some day! If you know him, please let me know.

I've been spinning disks and CDs for WCOM for over three years - having started Valentine's Day '05. Many years before that I worked for WUNC radio, the NPR affiliate station, as the producer of the People's Pharmacy Radio Show, and later as an environmental, science, and medicine reporter. I love radio and have enjoyed meeting the incredible jazz musicians we have playing in the Carrboro/Chapel Hill, Durham, and Raleigh area. As a state, we remain rich in jazz talent and it's my privilege to share this music during my show. Please join me for the fun.
